Jeanne Prevett Sable

Jeanne Sable has dedicated her life to the practice and promotion of sustainable living.

She was born in Boston, Massachusetts, a second generation American of Italian and Portuguese descent. She developed a love of reading, writing, and nature in early childhood, and began writing poetry at age four.

She attended public schools in greater Boston and entered New England College in Henniker, New Hampshire in 1965, majoring in English. She later married and helped construct a log home in New Hampshire, where she raised a son and practiced basic homesteading skills including organic vegetable gardening, canning and preserving, bread making, raising pigs and poultry. During that period she sold the first piece of freelance writing she ever submitted—a greeting card verse purchased by Rustcraft.

Starting in 1976, Jeanne wrote for and toured with Poor House Puppets, an educational traveling puppet theater, bringing environmental messages to schools, libraries, fairs and festivals throughout New England. Partially supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New England and New Hampshire Touring Programs, the company was awarded a special honorarium from the Canadian Government to perform her original show, What to do with the Blecky Thoo, live and over Canadian television at Ottawa’s Shaping the Future Fair in the late 1970’s. The production taught children not to litter, while intimating the future problems of nuclear waste disposal to more mature audience members. A self-taught singer/songwriter and accomplished finger-style guitarist, Jeanne also wrote the music and lyrics for the show. Though the troupe disbanded after funding for the arts dried up in the early ’80’s, Jeanne continues to write and perform acoustic music for area venues.

She turned to fulltime newspaper work in 1982, beginning as a reporter for the Winchendon Courier where she wrote and edited its sister paper, the State Line News. She was later named managing editor of the Jaffrey-Rindge Chronicle. In 1985, she joined the staff of the Peterborough Transcript, where she served at various times as reporter/ editor of the Jaffrey-Rindge section, features writer, and nature columnist.

In 1989 she went to fulltime freelance writing, concentrating on environmental issues and the arts while helping raise a step daughter. She has published hundreds of articles in local, regional, and national publications, including American Forests magazine, The American Legion, Farming, the Journal of Northeast Agriculture, the Keene Sentinel, and numerous others.

After a devastating house fire in 1994, she took time off to supervise and assist with construction of a new home. Soon after, she was hired to write nine episodes of the top-rated children’s Saturday morning television show, “Up in the Attic”, which aired over ABC affiliate station WMUR-TV in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Jeanne also pens for “Tammy the Wild Turkey”, the environmental “spokesbird” for America on Oneworld.net’s children’s web pages. Tammy’s guide to environmentally conscious shopping is located at: http://www.oneworld.net/penguin/features/shoppers/shopper_front.html

As owner of Write Decisions, Jeanne handles copy writing, editing, and proofreading work for authors, artists, and small businesses. Also an active member of her community, she has played a key role in several Earth Day projects, and currently serves as secretary to the Fitzwilliam Conservation Commission. She is on the Advisory Board of the Sustainability Project based in Gilsum, NH., a nonprofit organization promoting love of nature, the conservation and preservation of open lands, organic farming, volunteerism, intergenerational caring, community building, resource management, positive youth development and peaceful conflict resolution. She is also a volunteers on the Hannah Grimes Localvore project, an initiative to encourage the eating of locally grown foods.

In 2002, Jeanne began writing Seed Keepers of Crescentville, her first novel, in an effort to increase public awareness of the risks associated with irresponsible biotech agriculture.
